Proud To Work With The Royal Artillery

It was a great pleasure to work with the lads and lasses from the RA recently. They were a sound reminder that our nation is in the debt of many young professional people who risk their lives for us every day and it took me back a couple of years to my own time in uniform. My thoughts are with them and their families as ongoing deployments take them to far flung places and I was pleased to dangle them from a rope or two for some light relief.

Great Working With Parkdean

I had a great summer with a number of clients and some wonderful feedback from the HR Direector of Parkdean, Maggie Pavlou:

"Clive worked with a group of senior managers for me and in a very short space of time and in a very understated way, managed to get them communicating and focusing on their priorities and all whilst actually having some fun along the way. The fact that he also managed to get them abseiling down a cliff was no mean feat!
Tremendous intervention - enjoyed by all - valued by all !
I have absolutely no hesitation in recommending Clive to anyone who is looking to challange and get the best out of their management teams."

Vision & Strategy For Young People's Leadership Development

I am delighted with the results of a project that Alnside Associates was asked to facilitate by Northumberland County Council, bringing together a broad range of organisations from the Public, Private and Third Sectors to develop an innovative vision and strategy for developing Leadership skills for young people in the county.

One element of the project was a 'Thinking Day' where the group gelled together well and the combination of outdoor activities, small group exercises, overview briefings and a structured thinking process starting with creating concensus around beliefs brought the best from a truly talented team that had previously never worked together before.

Thanks must go to all on the day for making it fun and productive through their positive approach.

Newcastle Science City

Alnside Associates is delighted to have been appointed as a member of the Business Development Panel for Newcastle Science City.

This provides a great opportunity for the organisation to use the IT background that Clive has built over the last 9 years, leading new technology business growth.

New Project Leads The Way

Alnside Associates are delighted to have been appointed to facilitate the development of a Vision for Youth Leadership in Northumberland for Northumberland County Council. It is a subject very close to the heart of the business and draws on years of Leadership Provision as well as 20 years of strategy development experience in the private sector. It is a great endeavour and affords the opportunity for some really exceptional collaborative and innovative thinking.

Blyth Collier Brig Project

The Blyth Collier Brig Project continues at pace with support from Dame Ellen MacArthur and having the Duchess of Northumberland agree to be our patron. We have a site for the ship yard and visitor centre and are about to complete the initial boat design phase. I am now looking for sponsorship to get us through the cost of the fund raising exercise to raise £10.5 million. Any offers?

Scouting For Adults

Have you ever watched friend's or your kids going off to Scout camp, or climbing and sailing trips and wondered why the children have to have all the fun? Well fret no more, there is an organisation called Rover Scouts which is run by the Baden Powell Scout Association which is for those aged 18 years and above. It is a fellowship of the outdoors with a motto of 'Service' to the community. For 18 to 25 year olds it delivers the Duke of Edinburgh Gold award scheme and for 25 plus, a programme as advanced or relaxed as befits your fitness and ambition.

I run the Whittingham section and we do everything from ice climbing, river rafting and wild camping through to Jamie Oliver cooking nights, wine making and decorative knot tying.

Visit  http://www.1stwhittingham.org.uk/index.htm to find out more.

I have also just been appointed as Head Quarters Commissioner for Rover Scouts in the UK (the top job!!) and you may like to consider joining a group in your area.

You may even consider setting one up, if you are an outdoors person who is not interested in working with children but wants to put something back in to your community? If so check out the Rover section of the BP Scout Association Web site, it can be hugely rewarding:

Go on, make more of your life

Happy Christmas

Tall Order

I am delighted that 'alnside associates' has won an exciting commission to do a feasibility study on building a tall ship in Blyth as a key project within the Blyth regeneration process. Having spent a year building and training 4th Assault Squadron Royal Marines (the heart of the UK's amphibious capability back in the 80's) as an Acting Major, I have never lost my love of the sea and belief in the passion and inspiration that ships can bring to people. The ship itself will be a replica of the collier brig that Captain William Smith discovered the Southern Shetlands with over 200 years ago. To do this we will need a working specialist shipyard, a visitors centre and a training organisation. But the deeper aim is about inspiring adventure, changing lives and transforming belief structures to stimulate entrepreneurship, training the unemployed in transferable skills and grow a world class business as a beacon for the future.

The project is particularly exciting as it ticks all my favourite boxes:

  • It sounds like a tall order.
  • The outdoors and adventure are the heart of the change process.
  • When I went down to Blyth to talk to people about it they were genuinly keen and supportive.
  • It will really make a difference to people.

Wish me luck.
